Monkey business off the main line

Take a steam powered safari to spot the mysterious apes of Monkey Town! Since the 19th Century Heywood has been affectionately known to locals as Monkey Town, a name whose origins lie in the native accents of Irish rail workers, and the novel way they pronounced Heap Bridge as Ape Bridge.

To celebrate this storied past, and to encourage visitors to explore Heywood’s many delights, Heywood based PossAbilities, with help from the Big Lottery Fund, have created Monkey Town Goes Ape! The Monkey Town Trail.

This three-mile train takes in nine beautiful ape artworks created by local people and artists. Collect all of the unique symbols on each ape's base and enter a prize draw to win one of the apes at the end of Summer!
