Forget the summertime blues, it’s time for the summertime choo-choos, put down the summer wine and take a ride on the summer line… It’s summertime at the East Lancashire Railway is what we’re hinting at, and have we got a fantastic line-up for you! Highlights include trips with Thomas the Tank Engine, magical adventures at the Grand Old School of Wizardry and more!

The Princess Adventure – 27 July, 17 August

Join your favourite fairy-tale characters for a steam powered magic carpet ride into a whole new world of enchantment. Can you rescue the magical gems from the clutches of the maleficent villains to save Storybook Land and protect everyone’s happy endings? There’s only one way to find out!

This interactive family adventure includes a return steam train trip from Bury to Rawtenstall, a two-hour experience with your favourite fairy-tale characters, magical activities along the line and plenty of photo opportunities.

Tickets cost £11.50 per adult and £7.30 per child and must be purchased in advance.

The Pirate Adventure – 3, 24 August

Yo Ho Ho me hearties, get those timbers shivered and those main sails hoisted, it’s time to join Captain Kidd and his crazy crew on the Pirate Express as they hunt the seven seas for treasure, battling enemy pirates, lifting ancient curses and teaching you everything you need to know about being a pirate along the way!

This nautical day out includes a return trip from Bury to Rawtenstall via steam train, a two-hour buccaneering experience with East Lancashire’s scurviest dogs, pirate themed activities and a chest full of photo opportunities.

Tickets cost £11.50 per adult and £7.30 per child and must be purchased in advance.

Day Out With Thomas, 5 – 6 August

The Little Blue Engine and his friends return to the East Lancashire Railway for the second time in 2017! Join Thomas and The Fat Controller for a host of hilarious activities, including rides on Thomas, performances from Sodor station sweepers Rusty and Dusty, Thomas themed activities, re-enactments and much more.

Tickets include access to all of the day’s events as well as unlimited travel on the trains. We recommend visitors avoid the queues by booking in advance online.

Tickets cost £18.50 per adult, £10.50 per child and £47.50 for a family ticket (2 adults, 3 children). Under 2s are free.

School of Wizardry – 10, 31 August

It’s the first day of term at the Grand Old School of Wizardry but classes cannot start, it seems a set of sinister sorcerers have snagged a vital magical artefact! Join a faculty of wand waving wonders as you make the spellbinding trip to distant Rawtenstall to steal back the trinket and save the day (and the school)!

Tickets include a return trip from Bury to Rawtenstall on a heritage steam train, a two-hour experience with a staff of costumed characters, magical activities and photo opportunities.

Tickets cost £11.50 per adult and £7.30 per child and must be purchased in advance.

Theatre at the Museum – Jungle Book – 18 – 20 August

It’s time for the Bear Necessities, so stop monkeying around and join us on a jolly jaunt down to the jungle. Enjoy the story of Mowgli the man cub and his animal friends on this fully interactive adventure.

Experience Rudyard Kipling’s classic in a whole new way as you explore the Bury Transport Museum and discover what life is like in the wolf pack, how to avoid being hypnotised by a snake and the secret of man’s red flower. 

Tickets must be purchased in advance and cost £8.00 per adult, £7.00 per concession and £5.00 per child. A family ticket for 2 adults and 3 children costs £28.50.

Family Fun Weekend - 26 – 28 August

A fantastic alternative to the beach and the supreme way to see out the summer in steaming style, our new Family Fun Weekend offers a wide range of family friendly attractions! Perfect your skills as a master builder in the Lego pit, go for a donkey ride or take in a puppet show, there’s sure to be something that strikes your fancy along the 12-mile line!

Attractions also include Sand Art at Ramsbottom Station, Mini Golf and Face Painting at Rawtenstall Station and Miniature Railway Rides at Bury Transport Museum.
