Having fun and playing fools!

Just when you were getting used to the little ones being back at school they get sent back home for half term. You now face the daunting task of keeping them busy for a whole week lest you hear those dreaded words “I’m bored”.

The East Lancashire Railway is on hand with a helpful list of fun things to do to keep little minds busy. Stimulate the imagination at a creative craft workshop, enjoy a thrilling fairy tale adventure and explore the local area to your heart’s content.

So read on to find out what’s doing in the Irwell Valley this half term.

Spring Diesel Gala 17 – 18 February

What little tyke isn’t fascinated by trains? Introduce them to the world of heritage diesels at this excellent value weekend. Enjoy a ride (or three) on the all diesel services and get some superb snaps of your favourite locos whilst the kid’s fuel up with snacks and drinks at the platform buffet, it’s a great family day out.

Children’s Craft Workshop – Half Term Helicopters 21 February

This drop in craft workshop is based in the fascinating Bury Transport Museum and is ideal for keeping the youngsters busy. Let them explore their inner aviator as they build their own aircraft out of the materials provided. The Workshop runs from 11am – 3pm and costs £1 per child, all materials are provided.

Princess Academy 22 February

Join your favourite fairy-tale characters on a quest to rescue the magical gems of Storybook Land from the clutches of the evil villains. This interactive adventure will see your little lords and ladies learn the princess skills and knightly know how they will need to finish the story on an enchanted steam train ride. Tickets cost £13 per adult and £8.50 per child and pre booking is essential.

An ideal accompaniment to our own Children’s Craft Workshops these themed craft sessions are very creative and are recommended for 4 – 11 year olds. Entry is £3 per child, siblings under 4 are free. Find out more.

  • Touchstones Rochdale, Family Fun Day – Roll Out The Barrel, 15 February

Have a barrel of fun at this Family Fun Day, with activities including arts and crafts, dressing up and storytelling. Celebrate the fascinating story of the flour barrel sent as a gift by Abe Lincoln to the people of Rochdale during the civil war and find out how the fighting in America had an effect on Lancashire.   • Ski Rossendale, Fun Tubes, Tuesday – Friday throughout February

Make the most of Half Term by learning an entirely new skill on the slopes of Ski Rossendale. These tubular courses are great fun and make for an exciting and unique holiday activity. Tickets cost £10 per person, booking is essential. Find out more.

  • The Fusilier Museum, Chinese Dragon Masks, 21 February

Dragons are symbols of good luck in Chinese culture, so why not drop into the The Fusilier Museum to make your own dragon mask. The Lancashire Fusiliers served in China during the 1930s, so we are putting out Chinese silver, from the museum’s collection, for you to explore too! 10:30am - 12:30pm, £2 per child, under 4s free.
