The People's Engine, A3 60103 'Flying Scotsman', makes a hotly anticipated return to the East Lancashire Railway, visiting for a series of static displays and passenger services throughout the year.

Reserve your place in history (and bragging rights too) with a ride behind the world's most famous steam engine, 'Flying Scotsman', as she takes to the tracks for a series of passenger services through the picturesque Irwell Valley.

Tickets & Prices

There are two types of "Scotsman in Steam" tickets available:

  • Bury to Rawtenstall (Return) - Approximate journey time of 1 hour and 10 minutes
  • Bury to Heywood (Return) - Approximate journey time of 45 minues

It is possible to book both a Bury to Rawtenstall (Return) and a Bury to Heywood (Return) ticket to form a full line return journey, however please note that the same seats may not be available. Please check the seating plan during the online booking process to see if the same seats are available for both legs of the journey, if they have already been booked then you can select other seats. If your seats are different then you will need to swap when 'Flying Scotsman' returns to Bury (from Rawtenstall).

Tickets include a return journey behind Flying Scotsman and unlimited travel on other standard services throughout the day. Tickets must be booked in advance. No concessionary fares are available. 

Due to the busy nature of this event, it is not recommended that dogs attend.

Getting Here

The East Lancashire Railway is easily accessible with major roadlinks and good public transport systems nearby.

A short walk from Bury Bolton Street Station visitors will find Bury Interchange, a public transport hub, providing both bus and tram services. Manchester City Centre is just a 30-minute journey away via Metrolink tram.

Parking is available at all stations; however spaces are limited and subject to charges at Bury. Car parking in Bolton Street Station Car Park on Saturdays and Sundays is chargeable at a daily rate of £5 on Saturdays and £1 on Sundays. Heywood is just over a mile from the M62 and has a large free car park. Limited free parking is also available at Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall. Disabled parking bays are available at all manned stations.
