  • Santa Specials

There’s a nip in the air and we can hear the distant ringing of sleigh bells, that can only mean one thing! No we haven’t come down with a case of wintertime tinnitus, it’s Christmas here at the East Lancashire Railway.

We’re kicking things off in style this weekend with the first of our popular Santa Specials. Board a beautifully decorated carriage for a steam train trip through a winter wonderland and meet jolly old St Nick himself as he and his helpers travel through the train. Children will receive a present from Santa while adults will get a festive tipple and a mince pie.

Tickets are selling out fast so make sure you book today.

  • Lancashire Weekend

Here at the East Lancashire Railway we have a lot of love for our home county, that’s why we are marking the date when Lancashire sent its first representatives to Parliament in style! It’s been 722 years since our officials passed through the doors of the houses of parliament, and to be sure the county has seen more ups and downs that the Pennines in that time, but we have come through it all with our signature wry wit and no nonsense style!

So join us for a celebration of all things Lancastrian this 18 and 19 November. The packed programme of events includes a reading from Town Criers, traditional folk music and dancing and of course generous helpings of traditional Lancashire hot-pot.
We even have a special offer, for every two adult passengers who wear a red rose, one travels free!

  • City of Wells by Liam Barnes

Over the past two years we have been honoured to host Ex-Southern Railway Bulleid Light Pacific No. 34092 "City of Wells". Since her arrival at the East Lancashire Railway in July 2015, following a comprehensive overhaul, "Wells" has been a strong stalwart of our locomotive line-up. Come rain or shine, from snowy Santa Specials and haunted Halloween services to Steam Galas and luxury diners, "Wells" has proudly represented the ELR and done her bit for our cause and community. The locomotive has been such a mainstay of our work here that we would like to offer her a permanent home on the ELR.

Recently this beautiful engine has been put up for sale by her owners, her future destiny put in doubt, and we would be thrilled to add her strength to our own, increasing our own resources and resilience whilst at the same time providing what will be a loving home for an iconic engine. Negotiations with the owners have seen an agreement reached for the ELR to purchase 34092, but we need your help to assist us in funding this acquisition, which will strengthen the railway's permanent fleet of home-based steam locomotives.

We have launched our "A Home for Wells" appeal to raise £340,920 towards the costs of purchasing 34092, enabling us to offer "Wells" the home she deserves at our railway. This is why we need to call upon the help of our ever present ELR family, volunteers and visitors alike, to support this cause.
