  • The East Lancashire Railway has today confirmed that a planning application for the redevelopment of Rawtenstall Station has been approved by Rossendale Borough Council.

The £600,000 development, which is being led by Bury based Equilibrium Architects, will see Rawtenstall Station redeveloped to provide enhanced facilities for not only visitors to the East Lancashire Railway but the local community too.

Planning permission is being sought for the following:

    • Platform Canopy

The erection of an ‘L’ shaped canopy spanning the entire length and width of the station buildings.

    • New Station Building

The construction of a 37 metre fully accessible building, accommodating a café, kitchen, activity/community room, tourist information centre and toilet and baby changing facilities.

    • Alterations to Existing Station Building

The expansion of Buffer Stops Bar and relocation of current toilet facilities.

    • New Station Forecourt

The attractive remodelling of existing outside space, including landscaping, sheltered cycle stands and picnic areas.

More information on the development, including visuals and plans, will be available soon.

  • Santa Specials

There’s a nip in the air and we can hear the distant ringing of sleigh bells, that can only mean one thing! No we haven’t come down with a case of wintertime tinnitus, it’s Christmas here at the East Lancashire Railway.

We’re kicking things off in style this weekend with the first of our popular Santa Specials. Board a beautifully decorated carriage for a steam train trip through a winter wonderland and meet jolly old St Nick himself as he and his helpers travel through the train. Children will receive a present from Santa while adults will get a festive tipple and a mince pie.

Tickets are selling out fast so make sure you book today.

  • Lancashire Weekend

Here at the East Lancashire Railway we have a lot of love for our home county, that’s why we are marking the date when Lancashire sent its first representatives to Parliament in style! It’s been 722 years since our officials passed through the doors of the houses of parliament, and to be sure the county has seen more ups and downs that the Pennines in that time, but we have come through it all with our signature wry wit and no nonsense style!

So join us for a celebration of all things Lancastrian this 18 and 19 November. The packed programme of events includes a reading from Town Criers, traditional folk music and dancing and of course generous helpings of traditional Lancashire hot-pot.
We even have a special offer, for every two adult passengers who wear a red rose, one travels free!
