Our own tribute to the stalwart DMU locomotive. The timetable runs a number of these historic engines from the ELR home fleet. Come along for great atmosphere and great photo opportunities.
Residents’ Weekend – 22 – 23 March
Explore your local area like never before during the East Lancashire Railway’s Residents’ Weekend. This event opens discounted travel fares, usually only available to local permit holders, up to all of our local visitors! From cafes and real ale bars to farmers markets, museums and art galleries, the resident’s permit is your gateway to new discoveries in your own back yard, and this is your chance to try it out.
To take advantage of the discounted fares you must provide proof that you reside in the boroughs of Rochdale, Bury or Rossendale. A council tax, Utility bill or driving licence showing your postal address is all your need to sample the discounted fares over 22-23 March. Adults £5.00 and children and concession £3.50 for one full line return. You can purchase your tickets from our booking offices or from the on board travelling ticket inspector.

Classic Bike Rally – 20 April
Want to show off your petrol powered pride and joy? Visit the Classic Bike Rally at Bury Transport Museum. A number of these beautiful vehicles will be on display in the museum yard. Exhibitors enjoy free travel on the railway for themselves and one passenger, so trade the wheels for rails for a day and take a nice trip on the train! For refreshments drop into the Castlecroft Cafe in the museum yard, hot food and drinks are available.

Day Out With ThomasTM – 3 – 5 May
You are all invited to give Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends the welcome they deserve for their first visit to the East Lancashire Railway in 2014. Meet Sir Topham Hatt, ride with the little blue engine himself and get a free gift and much more! Enjoy face painting, Thomas games and film screenings, puppet and magic shows and a whole host of other things to see and do, all covered by your Thomas Day Rover Ticket.
1940s Weekend – 24 – 26 May
We’ll meet again at the East Lancashire Railway’s award-winning 1940s Weekend. Enjoy the glamour of a bygone era with period singing and dancing, re-enactments, vehicle displays and much more. This is truly an event that is not to be missed!
Summer Diesel Gala 4 – 6 July
Sunshine (with any luck) and diesels! Our Summer Diesel Gala is the perfect opportunity for diesel enthusiasts to get some brilliant sunlit diesel photos. Enjoy a soft drink or an ale at The Trackside whilst the genuine heritage locomotives trundle past. Featuring an all diesel timetable and all of the usual add-ons to an East Lancashire Railway Gala.
Raise the Roof – 18 – 19 July
The increasingly popular fundraising event – Raise the Roof – returns for its third year at The Trackside. Let the good times roll with a quirky selection of live music, home-made local food and real ale. All proceeds go towards the restoration of the canopy of Bury Bolton Street Station’s Platform 1.
Class 14 Diesel Gala – 25 – 27 July
A special diesel gala celebrating the teddy bears of the locomotive industry, the class 14! Pay tribute to the sadly short lived career of this diesel engine on British Rail with an intensive timetable running class 14s exclusively.
Day Out With ThomasTM – 2 – 3 August
Come and spend the day with Thomas and friends! Your Thomas Day Rover Ticket gets you unlimited access to all of the events and attractions, from face painting and magic shows to rides with the little blue engine himself. Make sure you behave as Sir Topham Hatt will be keeping an eye on things.
Teddy Bear’s Party – 25 August
If you go down to the railway today you’re sure of a big surprise… we are welcoming everyone (and their furry friends) back to Bury Transport Museum for the ultimate party. Enjoy fairground attractions, teddy bear parades with prizes for the best dressed teds and a treasure trail up the railway line. Kids with a teddy travel for free when accompanied by a full line return holding adult.
Transport Collectors Fair and VintageTransport Gathering – 13 – 14 September
Bury Transport Museum plays host to the Transport Collectors Fair this weekend. Browse stalls chock full of memorabilia and souvenirs and take in the interactive exhibitions. Sunday will see the Vintage Transport Gathering set up in the museum yard, immerse yourself in a display of vehicles from times gone by.

Day Out With ThomasTM – 4 – 5 October
Thomas’ last visit in 2014! There will be magic and circus shows, face painting, live Thomas scenarios, Thomas table top games, storytelling, film screenings and rides with Thomas himself. Autumn Steam Gala – 18 – 19 October
The final Steam Gala of 2014 is a real extravaganza. Join the East Lancashire Railway an intensive, all steam timetable which runs both ELR home fleet locos as well as special guests from elsewhere in the country!
Halloween Ghost Trains – 30 – 31 October, 1 November
There is a ghostly moaning in the train tunnel and an eerie chill on the platform, the Halloween Ghost Trains are coming back to the East Lancashire Railway for 2014! Join us for an evening of family friendly entertainment, with funny monsters and spooks, poltergeist parades, a haunted steam train ride, creepy craft workshops and much more! Dare you take a ride into the unknown?

Lancashire Weekend – 22 – 23 November 2014
The East Lancashire Railway commemorates the day in 1295 when Lancashire sent its first representatives to Parliament by King Edward I of England to attend what later became known as The Model Parliament. Celebrate this momentous event with us! Every two adults wearing red roses will be offered two for one full line return travel on the railway! To further mark the occasion The Trackside bar will be selling traditional Lancastrian food and a town crier will be reading the Lancashire Proclamation.
