Summer Holidays at the East Lancashire Railway

Spice up your summer with some steam powered surprises, the Summer Holidays are finally here!

The long school free weeks are stretching ahead into September and no doubt you are wondering how exactly you are going to fill up your days. Well don’t panic, the East Lancashire Railway is on hand with a summers-worth of smashing ideas to help you make the most out of the next few months.

We’ve got lots lined up for the little ones! Make some magic with the madcap mages of the Wizarding Adventure and climb aboard with Sir Topham Hatt at a Day Out with Thomas. Trot along with Peppa Pig and her family during the Peppa Pig and Friends Fun Day and sink your teeth into a roar-some afternoon with some dinky dinos on the Dinosaur Adventure.

Grown-ups are not being left out, enjoy events like the Classic Car Show and the Rossendale 60s Festival, or indulge in incredible experiences like the Rail Ale Trails, our Photography Courses or one of our many luxury Dining with Distinction journeys.

Make the most of the (hopefully) fantastic weather and take the opportunity to broaden your horizons and explore the East Lancashire Railway, we have even drawn up a handful of ready-made itineraries to inspire you. Explore the world famous Bury Market, hit the slopes at The Hill in Rossendale, stop for a cuppa at A Right Royal Tea Party or indulge at the Ramsbottom Chocolate Café. In Bury, just a stone’s throw from the station, you can visit our own Bury Transport Museum or refuel at our new look Trackside, complete with a new menu.

Dino Adventure

19 Aug

Get your teeth into this Jurassic lark. Join an eccentric expedition of quirky time travellers to meet a herd of adorable baby dinosaurs. You will get up close to these cute Cretaceous critters and maybe even get a chance to pet a Pachycephalosaurus or give a T-Rex a tickle under the chin. This adventure is perfect for little palaeontologists aged 5 – 12 but everyone will find something to enjoy.

Peppa Pig and Friends Fun Day

25 – 26 Aug

The East Lancashire Railway is thrilled to welcome back everyone’s favourite cheeky little piggies. Meet Peppa, George, Daddy Pig and Mummy Pig as they meet, greet, and entertain at intervals throughout the day in the fantastic Bury Transport Museum. The family fun continues with a Peppa Activity Trail, a fun fair, balloon modellers, face painters and a petting zoo.

Wizard Adventure

2 Sep

Sign up to our spellbinding school of sorcery and learn to become an expert of enchantment. During this interactive experience you’ll take lessons in the basics of broomsticks, practice your potion making, receive instruction in incantations and learn to talk with a tawny owl. This is the perfect adventure for students aged 5 – 12 and is a magical experience for the whole family.

Rossendale 60s Festival

9 – 11 Sep

Steam into the swinging 60s! For the first time since 2019 the Rossendale 60s Festival is making a groovy return, organised by the Rossendale community. Enjoy music, food, drink, art and fashion all themed around the hippest decade on record. The ELR will be getting into the spirit of the occasion, and our own Buffer Stops Bar will be hosting Rossendale Radio and playing a string of 60s hits, the perfect accompaniment to taking a ride on a genuine 1960s locomotive!

Chug your way through lush valleys, take in stunning scenery and sample delicious local beers on our famous Rail Ale Trail. This whistlestop tour of the finest pubs and bars in the Irwell Valley has a particular focus on the region’s long brewing traditions and the people who have shaped the towns and villages over the centuries.
