The East Lancashire Railway (ELR) is pleased to announce that respected railway historian and television presenter Tim Dunn will attend the official opening of the Railway 200 Inspiration Train during its visit to the heritage railway.

Tim Dunn will formally open the exhibition on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, marking the opening of the Inspiration Train at the East Lancashire Railway as part of the national Railway 200 celebrations.

Tim Dunn is widely known for bringing Britain’s railway history to a broad audience through his television work and writing, particularly for his accessible and engaging exploration of railway architecture, heritage, and the social impact of the railways.

The Inspiration Train is a touring exhibition delivered in partnership with the National Railway Museum. It has been created to commemorate 200 years since the birth of the modern railway in Britain, following the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.

Designed as a free, family-friendly experience, the exhibition is housed across several themed carriages. It explores the history of the railways, engineering and innovation, the people behind the railway, and the future of rail, including careers within the industry.

Mike Kelly, Chairman of the East Lancashire Railway, said “We are delighted to welcome Tim Dunn to open the Railway 200 Inspiration Train at the ELR officially. This visit marks an important moment in our participation in the National Railway 200 celebrations. It provides visitors including schools and railway enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to engage with the story of Britain’s railways, past, present, and future.”

The Railway 200 Inspiration Train will be open to visitors and schools at the East Lancashire Railway from 21 to 24 January 2026 before continuing its nationwide tour.
