Rawtenstall has an interesting heritage from its part in cotton production during the Industrial Revolution to the many shoe manufacturing factories from the mid-nineteenth century. Some of this important heritage can still be viewed today at The Whitaker, a fantastic museum and gallery housing paintings and Victorian natural history collections, as well as a great café.
In search of something a little more active? Pull on your boots, ski boots that is, and hit the slopes at Ski Rossendale. One of the best snow sport venues in the North West, Ski Rossendale provides dry ski slope facilities for skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing.
Work your way down Bank Street for some great independent retail therapy; make sure you call into Fitzpatricks, Britain’s last remaining temperance bar, for some light refreshments and to sample the non-alcoholic delights of a Sarsaparilla cordial. For something a little stronger, a visit to the railway’s own Buffer Stops Bar is a must for real ale aficionados.
The shop and café at Rawtenstall are located on the platform, ideal for quick refreshments and souvenirs to remember your day out on the ELR.
