Support the Viaduct

We’re sure lots of people reading this have taken a ride with us here at the East Lancashire Railway. You undoubtedly have enjoyed the sights and sounds of these immaculately preserved pieces of history as they power along, but have you ever stopped to consider the track, the bridges and viaducts?

Bridging the gap between community and railway

While the focus is understandably usually on the steam and diesel engines, the infrastructure is every bit as important to the reliable and safe running of the East Lancashire Railway. Every part, from the rails and sleepers to the signalling and structures, is a vital element in keeping our railway alive. As such, regular inspections are carried out every year to make sure that everything is up to code. Recent assessments have shown that Higher Woodhill Viaduct will need maintenance in the next 12 – 18 months to ensure that it can continue to serve the ELR for years to come.

The First Step

With this in mind, the ELR is currently attempting to secure Government funding to enable us to conduct these essential renovations.

The good news is that the railway has already passed the first stage of the Community Ownership Fund application process. This funding would come from the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, and offers funding to help repair assets that provide value to the community. Our railway, which is really your railway, has been part of Bury for over one hundred years, and so certainly qualifies.

Now we need to make a strong case of why we should be given the funds needed to complete the necessary renovations.

How can I help?

You can support us with a financial donation through a Just Giving page set-up specifically for this campaign – simply scan the QR code or click here

For the second stage of the process, we want to demonstrate that we have the community behind us. With your support we can make sure the ELR is around to provide you, your children, and their children with precious memories for years to come. We can show that the railway is more than just a nice day out, it is a vital throughline connecting communities and businesses throughout the Irwell Valley.
