 From the 1860s to the 1960s, British life has been defined by its railways, and Diesel Locomotives have been the driving power behind that life for decades. Get a taste of real power behind one of these beasts! Experiences are ideally suited to lovers of slightly blurred passing landscapes and very loud engines.

Bronze Diesel Footplate Experience

Our Bronze Diesel Experiences let participants become fully fledged railway men and women for the day. Participant will be the envy of their friends as they step behind the buttons and dials of one of these powerful machines and put the power down on a round trip of the railway.


Each experience includes:

• Safety briefing and basic instruction

• Half-day driving and second-manning for 16 miles and guarding and travel for a further 16 miles between our Heywood and Ramsbottom stations*

• Lunch for participant with option to include guests**

• Half-day guided tour behind the scenes of the ELR

• Photographic opportunities

• A commemorative certificate signed by the Driver and Secondman.

Silver Diesel Footplate Experiences

The premium experience for diesel devotees and the perfect realisation of your dreams of being a real train driver, this pre-made package represents the complete diesel adventure. Spend an entire day driving, second manning and guarding the locomotive and enjoy a filling lunch with the crew.

Each experience includes:

• Safety briefing and basic instruction

• Full-day driving and second-manning for 32 miles and guarding and travel for a further 32 miles between our Heywood and Ramsbottom stations*

• Lunch for participant with option to include guests**

• Photographic opportunities

• A commemorative certificate signed by the Driver and Secondman.

All our 2016 Silver Diesel Footplate Experiences are now fully booked, please keep checking our website for our 2017 dates.

Our vouchers are available for all the courses we offer and come with a 12 month validity, so there is plenty of time for the recipient to book on one of our many courses. PLEASE NOTE:

Participants (*and guests attending the Guided Tour) must:
• *Be physically fit and aged over 18 at the time of the experience. Our risk assessment process requires that a doctor’s letter be provided confirming that participants over the age of 75 are medically fit and capable to participate in the Footplate Experience. This must be made available to the railway before the day of the activity.
• Be able, in the event of an emergency evacuation; to climb on/off the locomotive from ground level unaided, this may be up to a 3 metre (10 feet) vertical climb with steps at up to 0.6M (2ft) spacing. You must also be able to cope with discomfort, variable temperatures, weather and lighting, heights (viaducts and bridges), dark (tunnel), noise and vibration.
• Be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate from 20 metres.
• Must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions in noisy surroundings.
• *Disclose any medical conditions and treatment/medication that may affect mobility, concentration, dexterity, co-ordination, consciousness and ability to understand and follow instructions.
